Students of 1 ° of the grade of Aerospace Engineering win international contest
Five students of the first year of the Degree of Space Engineering of the Technical School of Design Engineering of the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV) -Irene Solbes, Diego Peñarrubia, Andreu Giménez, Carlos Díaz and Josep Romero- have proclaimed winners of the Challenge Of Material Selection 2016.
The contest, organized by Granta and the Polytechnic University of Madrid in the framework of the Materials Week 2016, recognizes the best proposals related to the selection of materials in the resolution of problems of engineering, design, architecture and sustainability.
A new material resistant to supersonic speeds, their proposal.
From the database of Granta, the students of the UPV have designed a crystal for supersonic aircraft. To do this, they have created a new material, composed of different layers of polymer and glass, resistant to speeds higher than sound speed.
Tutored by Javier Orozco, professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials UPV who encouraged them to participate in the project, the young students have imposed on the competition to 80 other Ibero-American teams.
Original design, complex and close to a real situation
At the time of its decision, the jury valued the originality of the proposal, the complexity of the calculations necessary to carry out the project and the proximity of it to a real case of material selection.
